Clean Maritime

A fresh approach to maritime decarbonisation

Maritime transport is the backbone of international trade with more than 80% of the world’s goods transported by sea. With 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions coming from the maritime sector, if left unchecked, current growth rates suggest that this could increase to 10% by 2050.

If we are to reverse this trend we must be bold and move quicker to implement innovative technologies and practices.

706 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent was emitted from international shipping in 2023.

The UK National Clean Maritime Research Hub is focusing on research at lower technology readiness levels to inform future research, development and deployment. Through collaboration with stakeholders from across the maritime sector, the Hub aims to drive forward innovation and transformation, establishing the UK’s competitive advantage by setting a global benchmark for excellence.
